Why Should You Choose Vegan Cosmetics, and What Is Vegan Beauty?

I am so honoured to have received the Vegan Choice award recently, and some of my friends asked why it was important to me to offer vegan cosmetics.  Some choose vegan products for ethical reasons, and there are health and environmental reasons too.

Vegan Beauty VS Cruelty Free

I want my cosmetics to be both vegan and cruelty free, and this is why … Vegan Beauty refers to the absence of animal ingredients, where as cruelty-free means a product, and all the ingredients within that product, has not been tested on animals.  It is possible for a vegan product to be tested on animals, and for a cruelty-free product to contain animal ingredients.

Here’s another one to make you think!

Vegan Beauty VS Natural Cosmetics

Just because a product is vegan doesn’t mean it is high quality or natural. Products that are 100% vegan can be 100% synthetic and 0% natural.  This is because petroleum based ingredients (or synthetic ingredients) are not animal derived.  They are often inexpensive and find their way into almost all makeup, skin care and hair care products.  These synthetic ingredients are mostly not biodegradable, meaning they end up in our water and soil after we remove them.

Check your Ingredients listings, you might just find ...

Honey, beeswax, lanolin (wool grease), squalene (shark liver oil), carmine (crushed beetles), gelatin (cow or pig bones, tendons or ligaments), allantoin (cow urine), ambergris (whale vomit), placenta (from sheep), animal fat (tallow), guanine (fish scales) and animal hair to produce makeup brushes.

Some animal ingredients are the by-products of slaughter houses, where other animals are hunted for their 'contribution' such as squirrels for their hair for makeup brushes.  When I started as a Makeup Artist our brushes were all animal hair, but these days the nylon brushes offer a professional feel and are as effective as the animal hair brushes.

These ingredients will not harm you, unless you have an allergy, but it’s the thought of putting these ingredients on our skin that turns people off and makes us think about what we are putting on our skin.

My decision

We have found that using vegan or plant-based ingredients together with minimal important additives to prevent bacteria growth is the key to offering a great performing product that you can feel good about using, while getting excellent results.

People are starting to question and research what they’re buying, and making decisions based on their personal philosophy and values.
